Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few helpful hints and tidbits regarding the convention that you might find useful...
I am meeting some friends in San Diego, can I bring them along?
Certainly! The more the merrier, as long as they register and send in their registration fee. We are very sorry to have to decline otherwise. It simply wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the attendees as all convention costs are covered by the attendee’s registration fees. If they are not going to be around for the entire convention, please email the admiralty@hhus2008.com about the possibility of a one day registration fee.
Can I bring my own Hornblower things?
Of course! We can never have too much Hornblower! We'd love to see scrapbooks, photos and other items that you are willing to share! Just make sure to label and keep them with you at all times since the crew will have plenty to do and won’t be able to keep an eye on them.
I've got a movie I'd like to show on the big screen. How do I reserve the room?
Send your request listing the name of the movie, its length and the preferred time you would like to show it to the admiralty@hhus2008.com. Requests will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis with priority being given to movies with Hornblower connections/cast members.
Can we decorate our hotel room doors?
The hotel does allow things to be posted on the doors as long as painter’s tape is used (the blue one). If you and your roommates would like to add to the atmosphere of the convention by putting up some Hornblower pics, we'd love to see 'em!
What kind of weather should I expect?
If we knew that, we’d be so rich we would be able to host the convention on the Grand Turk… all expenses paid. The weather in San Diego during October can vary greatly. We recommend that you check out the weather forecast before heading out west (isn't everyone heading west?).
What kind of clothes should I bring?
Comfortable ones! Check the weather, of course, and don't forget good walking shoes. All of the sites we'll be visiting are within easy walking distance of the hotel and the waterfront is a great place for a stroll. The hotel offers an outdoor pool and fitness center, so feel free to bring a swimsuit and some workout clothes if you are so inclined! A light jacket for the activities on the water would not go amiss.
Will there be a costume event?
While we are not planning on a costume event, you’ll never find a better group to be around wearing one of your creations, specially if they are Age of Sail inspired. It won’t be the first or the last time an intrepid horatian has been seen visiting aboard a tallship wearing a Lieutenant’s uniform.
I'd like to stay a little longer and do some sightseeing. Can the convention crew recommend any points of interest?
There is so much to see and do in San Diego and the surrounding area that it will pay off doing a little research ahead of time. You can find a list of places in and around San Diego in our AREA ATTRACTIONS page. Be sure to check out the San Diego Visitor’s Bureau website as well, they are a great resource. If you are planning on extending your stay, the hotel is offering the discounted convention rates to our group both before and after the convention. Please contact us at the admiralty@hhus2008.com as you will not be able to book the room through the hotel link for the extended days.
Who makes the hotel reservations?
Hotel reservations need to be made by the individuals in the room (up to four people allowed). You will be responsible for all hotel charges (room charges, phone calls, room service, etc.). To reserve your room, please follow the hotel link in the ACCOMMODATIONS page. Reservations must be made no later than September 10, 2008 to get the discount. After that, reservations will be accepted by the hotel on a space available basis and at the hotel's prevailing rate.
Help! I need a roommate! What do I do?
You can post a request in the horatians forum. You may need to register if you are not already a member in order to post your request.
I'm going to be arriving well before check-in. What am I supposed to do with all my stuff?
Please email the convention crew at the admiralty@hhus2008.com in order for us to inquire if alternate arrangements can be made for those arriving before the rooms are available.
I'm planning on coming to the convention and I want to keep up to date...do I have to keep checking the web site to do that?
Be sure to provide your email address in the registration form so we can contact you with important convention updates. If you have not registered yet and are still trying to make up your mind, but would like to receive con updates, please email the admiralty@hhus2008.com and request to be added to the email list. Be sure to provide your name and email address.
I'm ready to sign up! How do I register?
